Over the last few years, the urban music industry has seen an evolution bridging together forms of music from the streets from different cultures, including Hip Hop, R&B, Jamaican Reggae and Latin music. Within this movement, DJ Buddha has also developed and evolved into becoming an integral player in the future expansion of these genres. In a crowded market, this Dominican born deejay out of Boston has been able to make a name for himself through his love of the music, sticking close to his roots and keeping on the pulse of what’s happening in the streets. Being an active participant in the music scene, it wasn’t long before DJ Buddha built relationships with the artists whose music he had been promoting. As the official deejay for dancehall reggae group T.O.K. and backing up other artists like Mr. Easy, Mighty Mystic, Tanto Metro & Devonte, Lady Saw as well, he has traveled and showcased his skills around the world. He has performed on Hot 97’s On Da Reggae Tip and Summer Jam, Mixshow Power Summit showcase, MTV Heineken House Party, Mun2 ‘The Roof,’ and more. DJ Buddha was also a mixshow deejay for two years on WJMN 94.5, New England’s biggest radio station. His latest feats include smashing out two hot mixtapes a month: the Caribbean Connection and the Tropical Heat series, along with most recently having a remix picked up by multi-platinum recording artist/producer Lil Jon. The remix, Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” featuring Pitbull and N.O.R.E. first appeared on Caribbean Connection Volume 2 and caught the attention of Lil Jon who felt the vibe and retained it for his upcoming “Crunk Juice” album. While not just a reggae/reggaeton deejay, Buddha’s affinity for Caribbean and Latin music has helped him become a master at what he does: play records, create hype remixes and mixtapes, break records and spot hot talent. “I’m an all around dj who knows music. I started playing Spanish music and deejaying in Spanish clubs. I love music and enjoy deejaying all music including house, hip hop, r&b, slow jams to whatever can move a crowd,” says Buddha. DJ Buddha earned his radio license at the tender age of 9 years old and inherited his passion for music from his father who was a musician and a radio deejay as well. From working at a radio station, he started deejaying at local clubs before he was even in high school. Growing up in an ethnically diverse neighborhood outside of Boston, his broad musical influences came from his parents who used to play merengue, salsa, boleros and bachata on the weekends and incorporating it with the music he was hearing in the American streets like hip hop, r&b and reggae. As an active member of the deejay team Smash Squad, which includes the likes of Clinton Sparks, Chubby Chubb, Tony Touch, Danny S, Rukiz and Statik Selektah to name a few, Buddha’s latest venture in association with rising marketing team La Favela, comes in the form of a mixtape and a movement called “Caribbean Connection,” which delivers the ‘world’s hottest continuous mix of dancehall reggae and reggaeton.’ The premise behind Caribbean Connection being an effort to promote both West Indian and Latin music from the islands and feed the growing worldwide demand for the art forms. From Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba and beyond, these hotbeds of creativity were in dire need of a force like DJ Buddha and La Favela to see the vision and the future of the music and the culture to grow globally. Along with the “Caribbean Connection” and ‘Tropical Heat” series, DJ Buddha puts out “Shit 2 Bump 2,” a collection of the hottest hip hop and r&b from the streets. He also created two different promotional mixtape samplers of T.O.K and Lady Saw for reggae indie label VP Records. Buddha is constantly flexing his skills with remixing records, having recently worked with remixes of T.O.K, Lady Saw, Miami Cuban artist Pitbull and aforementioned Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee, to name a few. It is undeniable that, with a growing market of both ethnic and non-ethnic consumers, urban music will continue to grow and DJ Buddha will undoubtedly be at the forefront of the revolution.
